Silverton is located on The Alpine Loop, one of the most scenic offroad trails in North America.  The loop is mostly high clearance, 4x4 terrain not suitable for passenger cars or most 2 wheel drive vehicles.
If you bring your own unregistered vehicle, you are required to purchase a permit (available in town at Silverton Grocery) to ride the loop.
Currently all off road, unlicensed vehicles are prohibited within the town of Silverton.  
There are rental companies in town who will rent you a vehicle and aid you in getting to a legal area to stage and begin riding.  There are countless backcountry trails to ride on the doorstep of Silverton.  It is truly an offroader's mecca!
